Overhauling the Combino Brake Units & Circuit Breakers for Yarra Trams
Yarra Trams, the operator of the tram network in Melbourne, Australia, operates a fleet of Combino trams which require regular maintenance and overhauls to ensure their continued safe and reliable operation. The brakes are a critical component of these trams and require specialized knowledge and expertise for their overhaul. This case study describes the successful completion of the 16-year overhaul of the Combino brake units by IMTRAM, the authorized service center for H&K and Secheron.
The Combino (D-Class) fleet comprises of 38 D1-Class and 21 D2-Class trams that have been in operation for over 2 decades. After the successful completion of the 8-year overhaul, IMTRAM was responsible for the 16-year overhaul of the Combino brake units. H&K, a world leader in developing braking systems, hydraulic levelling systems, sanding systems, and track brakes for trams, light railways, and metros, backed IMTRAM with their expertise and support to ensure the best solution for this overhaul.

The overhaul of the Combino brake units posed several challenges. The project required specialized knowledge and expertise in the overhaul and testing of the brake units to ensure their safe and reliable operation for another 8 years. The project also required a full factory test on all components of the brake units, which required specialized facilities and equipment. Additionally, the overhaul also included Secheron High Speed Circuit Breakers.
IMTRAM is equipped with the necessary facilities and equipment to overhaul and complete a full factory test on all components of the brake units and circuit breakers.
During the overhaul of the units, IMTRAM completely disassembled the components and used an eco-wash process to degrease and clean them. After reassembling the units with a predefined kit set, they were painted to OEM specifications. This meticulous process ensured that the brake units were restored to their original condition.

The full factory test on all components of the brake units ensured that they were functioning correctly and met the required safety standards. With the ability to Trip Test up to 5,000A, the testing of Secheron High Speed Circuit Breakers ensured their longevity and reliability.
